Member Spotlight - Bald Guy Greetings
Tell us about your company and/or your products.Bald Guy Greetings is a line of humorous greeting cards founded in 2006 by Ian Kalman (Writer) and Sean Farrell (Designer). We originally conceived of Bald Guy Greetings to fill a hole that we saw in the greeting card industry – cards that sound the way people really speak to friends. Cards that were honest, sarcastic, and truly funny. As it turns out, people really enjoyed getting an honest card. In fact, Bald Guy Greetings has developed a super loyal following of customers. Customers that, in review after review on YELP, Google reviews and social media that vow to exclusively send Bald Guy Greetings. They buy them by the handful and always get a positive reaction from the recipient. Often a phone call to say thank you. Of course, we still urge our customers NOT to send out our sympathy cards. For that, there are better cards out there. We’ll be the first to admit that. Bald Guy Greetings aren’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for a card to give a close friend that enjoys laughing -- man, have we got the cards for you. What’s your role at your company? As the owner of small business, I wear many hats. I write the cards, develop relations with our existing stores as well as seek out new locations. I reply to every email or phone call and update our social media accounts several times a week. I pack up every order the day it comes in and send out every order within 24 hours. 90% of all orders are sent out the day they come in. I also place reprint orders weekly and send out our monthly newsletter – The Bald Street Journal. It’s a lot, but when you love what you do – it really doesn’t feel like work. I honestly love what I do, and I hope I can continue to do it forever. Or at least, until I run out of funny and relatable things to say. At that point, I’ll probably hire someone younger, funnier and with more hair. Why did you become a GCA member and tell us about your GCA experience so far.I became members of the GCA so we could be a bigger part of the greeting card community. I think the GCA is an amazing resource and I look forward to learning from even more experienced members on the best practices to grow Bald Guy Greetings. There is so much that we still have to learn and we think that joining the GCA will not only help us grow, but it will give us a platform so that we can continue to help others grow. What inspired you to get involved in the greeting card industry? When we started Bald Guy Greetings, it seemed there wasn’t a greeting card line out there that sounded the way we speak with our friends and family members. Sure, cards were beautifully designed and thoughtfully written and funny, of course. But they just didn’t speak to us. They didn’t sound the way we speak. There was a hole in the greeting card aisle and we wanted to fill it. So we got to work and started Bald Guy Greetings. 17 years later, we’re still going strong and we’re always the #1 or #2 selling humor line at just about every store we partner with. What's something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?Hmm, that’s a good question. Everyone knows that I’m bald, of course. Otherwise, it would just be rude of me to name my company Bald Guy Greetings. I guess most people assume that I’m more outgoing than I’m more of an extrovert than I really am -- and I totally understand that. But in a group dynamic, I’m usually pretty shy. Is there anything else you’d like to share? Not off the top of my head, but if there’s anything else anyone would like to know – shoot me an email or give me a call. I’m always here to help and answer any questions that you have. Thank you so much for reading this. I’m sorry it wasn’t funny. I promise I’m much more charming in real life. Ian Kalman |
